‘Puppy’ Covered In Prickly Cacti Freed From Pain

  • A little ‘puppy’ was found covered in thorny cacti stuck on its legs, shoulders and face.
  • The woman who found the animal enlisted the help of two golf workers who gently pried the cholla cacti clumps out.
  • The animal, which turned out to be a barely-week-old coyote, was immediately reunited with his mom who was keeping an eye on the “rescue” the whole time.

When 85-year-old Gwen Maxwell was about to leave her home, a strange animal looking like a puppy crossed her street.  It appeared to be having difficulty and so she inspected it.  And she discovered that the pup had seven huge clumps of cholla cacti sticking to its legs, shoulders, and face.

And the pitiful lump even collapsed from the heat and maybe the pain it was suffering.  It turns out that the animal was a coyote pup which was just barely a week old.

Gwen said, “He’d get up and tumble around with all those chollas on him. It was just so heartbreaking.”

Gwen knew she really had to get help. All the time, the pup’s mama was watching and keeping a vigil in Gwen’s backyard.

Help arrived in the form of two employees from the nearby golf course — Jose Soto and Shawn Brodie who quickly pulled out the prickly thorns from the pup’s fur.

As if it knew that it was going to be freed from all the pain,  the pup remained calm and did not make a sound or even attempt to bite.

Luckily, aside from getting bloody and bruised from all the thorns stuck in his fur, the little baby was fine.

So after the amazing rescue was over and photos were taken, they let him go to unite with the waiting mom.

Thank you, Gwen, Jose and Shawn! It is heartwarming to know that a helping hand is there when one needs it no matter what species.
