Puppy Thinks Dog In The Mirror Is An ‘Intruder’

Freyja continues to learn what’s inside their house. Ashley Spada decided on the recent addition a few months back. The puppy is smart and she is picking up on everything new around her, including tactics to get her parents to squeeze in their playtime into their demanding schedule.

“Whenever she wants attention she will find a sock or slipper, or something she knows she’s not supposed to have and run out to us staring us down until we get up to chase her around,” Ashley said. 

There is one concept that continues to confuse her: mirrors. Her mom would pick her up to look in the mirror. Back then, there is nothing unusual about her reaction, perhaps because there is another reflection on it too. Her reaction to her reflection when she’s alone is a different situation altogether.

“She will bark at the ‘intruder’ and always checks behind or even goes in our room to check in there,” Ashley said. 

Her parents continue to teach her about mirrors — that the strange puppy in the mirror is actually her — but nothing clicked so far. Freyja checks behind the mirror every time, looking to find the other puppy staring back at her.

 “I actually showed her the mirror again today and she was not happy about that other dog, but she just woke up from a nap and did her lazy bark/play where she just lays on her stomach,” Ashley said. 

Freyja is smart. She is bound to understand the concept soon enough, but until then, she continues her search for the puppy from the mirror, probably to convince them to play with her.
