Rare Birds in England Stage Astonishing Population Surge

England’s elusive nightjar is flourishing once again thanks to dedicated conservation efforts across the South Downs National Park. These unique birds, famous for their chortling calls and incredible camouflage, are staging a remarkable comeback in their ancestral nesting grounds.
A recent survey within the park counted over 70 birds, signaling that the population has effectively doubled in just five years. These resilient travelers migrate 4,000 miles from the Democratic Republic of the Congo to reside in the UK each spring.
Quick Smiles:
- Nightjar populations have increased by 100% in the South Downs over the last five years.
- Conservationists have identified 109 high-quality nesting habitats across Britain following extensive forest restoration.
- The species is incredibly versatile, inhabiting almost every continent and a wide variety of elevations.
Forest and heathland restoration projects have been vital in creating new homes for these ground-nesting birds. Successful communication with park visitors has encouraged dog owners to use leashes and stay on marked trails to protect sensitive habitats.
“It’s wonderful to hear the nightjars churring away as dusk falls and we’re looking forward to continuing this incredibly positive conservation work alongside local communities and our partners.”
South Downs ranger Kirsty Murray told the BBC.
“Good nightjar habitat is as rare as rainforest in Britain, and it is the best thing in the world that the animal is repopulating the park.”
These winged wonders remain some of the most fascinating visitors to the British countryside during the summer months. Their recovery serves as a beautiful testament to what can be achieved when communities work together to protect local wildlife.
