  • The number of abandoned dogs has been increasing since the start of the pandemic.
  • The most recent case involved a puppy who was left chained to a bench with a note asking to adopt him.
  • Would-be adopters are now being screened so he can end in the best home.

A golden retriever mix was recently abandoned, chained to a street bench with a note beside it.

The note, translated from Spanish, read: “Hi, please adopt me: Max. Please, I ask that you adopt this cute dog and you take good care of him. It hurts a lot to leave my dog here but I made the decision of leaving him because my family used to mistreat him and it would always hurt me to see him in that condition. If you’re reading this and your heart wavers, please adopt him and take good care of him. If not, please leave this note in its place. That way others can read it and adopt him. Thank you.”

A crowd of strangers was already gathered around the little puppy when Marcela Goldberg and fellow rescuer Azul Galindo reached the puppy. Goldberg was not surprised that this happened — a lot of dogs have been abandoned in her town since the pandemic started.

The shaking, scared puppy could only look at the people. Not even the smell of food could distract or relax the dog as they approached him.

Goldberg said, “I wore protective gloves to be able to approach with more confidence, but it was still difficult. We contacted a trainer with experience in aggressive dogs who watched the situation by video call and gave me instructions until we managed to pass the loop [over his head] and cut the other chain.”

The dog’s demeanor changed as soon as they cut the chain. He no longer growled, but was still scared. Getting pets from Goldberg as they travelled to the shelter made the dog calm down.

At the shelter, the 7-month-old dog, who has been renamed Boston, is mellowing up to people and letting his playful personality emerge.

Goldberg said, “He is sweet, very affectionate, he loves to give kisses and play with the ball that the vet gave him.”

With loving care from the shelter, Boston is no longer frightened.

He is up for adoption and applications are being reviewed so that he could go to the best forever home that he deserves.
