Quick Smiles:

  • Honey, a 12-year-old dog, protected her New Mexico home from a bear.
  • The brave pup helped defend her family and 60 chickens during the encounter.
  • After emergency care and surgery, Honey has returned home to recover.

A courageous twelve-year-old dog named Honey proved that age is just a number when she defended her New Mexico home from a hungry bear. Despite being half-blind and frightened of vacuum cleaners, the senior dog engaged the intruder to protect her family and sixty chickens.

The brave pup suffered serious injuries during the encounter, including deep punctures and bruising. Her family rushed her to Española Humane where she underwent emergency surgery and life-saving medical treatments.

“She is our little savior—she’s always been protective that way,” Denise Martinez told the Guardian.

“She risked her life to save not just the coop, but her family, from that bear.”

Honey has since made a miraculous recovery and is back at home resting with her loved ones. Her community and family are celebrating the incredible spirit of this local hero who transitioned from ranch dog to family protector.

This heartwarming story reminds us all of the deep bond and loyalty that senior pets have for their families. We hope Honey enjoys many peaceful naps and treats during her well-deserved retirement on the ranch.
