Quick Smiles:

  • Researchers found grapevines growing under solar panels produced larger, healthier fruit.
  • The agrivoltaic setup also generated renewable electricity without harming the vines.
  • Scientists at the University of Bari see a promising future for combining farming and solar energy.

Researchers at the University of Bari have discovered that grapevines planted beneath solar panels grow more robustly and yield higher-quality fruit. The shade provided by the panels creates a cooler, more stable microclimate that reduces stress on the plants during hot summers.

The agrivoltaic vineyard study revealed that the grapes were not only bigger but also contained more desirable sugar levels for winemaking. Clean electricity produced by the panels above the vines offers an added benefit, allowing farmers to power operations sustainably while improving crop output.

“The results exceeded our expectations,” said the lead researcher at the University of Bari. “We observed improved vine health and increased fruit size without compromising the quality of the grapes.”

“This dual-use approach could transform how vineyards operate in regions facing extreme heat,” the researcher added.

The team plans to expand the project to include different grape varieties and climates, hoping to prove that solar canopies can benefit farmers around the world.
