Squirrel Accidentally Gets Drunk on Pears [Video]

• When Katy left out an old pear for her pet pig, Lil Red the squirrel snatched it for himself.
• It turns out that the pear had become fermented, and Lil Red got himself drunk!
• When Katy saw him at his feeding spot, he was spacing out and kept losing his balance.

This squirrel has been living in Katy Morlok’s yard for the past year or so. He was even named Lil Red by Katy’s kids.

Katy usually leaves out dried corn and seeds for him to munch on.

Last week, however, his meal had an extra kick.

Katy was cleaning out her refrigerator when she noticed a bag of pears that have gone uneaten. She decided to leave one outside for her pet pig to avoid the fruits going to waste.

The pear ended up being ignored by the pig, but Lil Red snatched it up and took it with him to the trees.

“He was so excited and worked and worked ’til he could get a good enough grip on the pear to bring the whole thing up the tree. So, I put the rest of the old pears out for the squirrels,” Katy told The Dodo.

The next time Katy saw Lil Red in his usual feeding spot, he was acting a bit unusual:

He looked like he was drunk! He was clearly spacing out, and whenever he lost his balance, he clung to his food bowl.

Katy realized that the old pears might have become fermented: “I had accidentally gotten the squirrel drunk!”

So, she decided to throw away the rest of the pears instead of letting the squirrel continue to get drunk on them. Lil Red could still climb and run, but a bit unsteadily, so Katy couldn’t risk it. He might be vulnerable to predators if he stays drunk.

Lil Red is fine now, once he got over the hangover.

Katy shared, “I was so delighted to see Lil Red back at the feeder the next morning for his ‘hangover breakfast.’ He has been back to the feeder many times now and is perfectly fine.”

It turns out that squirrels tend to get drunk when nibbling on fermented fruit out in the wild. However, Katy decided she won’t be the booze supplier for Lil Red.

Katy pointed out that Lil Red’s hilarious drunk episode seems on par with how crazy this year has been.

“I think it is about as 2020 as it gets! Even the squirrels need a break from this reality,” she shared.
