St. Louis resident Michael Goessling always knew he was adopted, but he never imagined the story behind his birth parents would lead him to a chart-topping musician.

After taking a 23andMe DNA test, Michael learned the identity of his biological mother, who then introduced him to his father.

“And then I finally said, ‘Are you Michael McDonald?’” he recalled. “And he said, ‘Yeah, I’m afraid so.’”

The revelation that his biological father is the legendary Doobie Brothers vocalist Michael McDonald left both men stunned and grateful for the life each had lived.

Michael McDonald shared the quiet guilt he carried for decades, admitting he worried whether the child he could not raise had found happiness.

“I always carried that guilt with me,” the singer said. “But just to know that he was okay and that he had a good life, and a life certainly that I wouldn’t have been able to afford him at that time in my life, was a great reward.”

He quickly added that the real heroes are the adoptive parents who gave his son the love and stability he could not provide at the time.

“The real rock stars in this story for us are his adoptive parents, who really gave Michael everything a child needs in terms of love and security.”

When father and son finally embraced, the moment was filled with warmth and acceptance.

“He just put his arms out, just gave me a big old bear hug and told me he loved me, and I told him the same,” Michael Goessling said.

Both men now look forward to building a relationship rooted in gratitude, music, and family.
