A little act of compassion might mean a lot more than you realize. It changed everything for a cat named Granpruno.

Last summer, a couple in Montreal began leaving food out for stray cats in their area. It didn’t take long for them to discover a grumpy-looking tabby that seemed unusually hungry. They nicknamed him “Granpruno” because he looked like one of their kittens named Pruno.

Granpruno came to the couple’s yard on a daily basis, but he was so friendly and social that they assumed he had a home and a family.

Chatons Orphelins Montréal, a Montreal-based animal rescue, shared on a Facebook post that Granpruno was looking for attention and was delighted to receive it and that he came as soon as they summoned him. According to the shelter, Granpruno was nice and sociable; has beautiful hair, and looked normal.

The couple became concerned when Granpruno failed to show up one day. They hoped he was safe and happy with his family, but they kept food out and kept an eye on their yard in case he returned.

They were cleaning out the trash a few weeks later when they noticed Granpruno in their bin. They couldn’t believe how much the adorable cat had changed.

“He was skin and bones and he didn’t look well at all,” Chatons Orphelins Montréal shared. “He came up to them and they hugged him straight away. He let himself go [with them] without saying anything.”

The pair, who works for Chatons Orphelins Montréal as volunteers, saw that he need emergency veterinary care and brought him to the rescue for assistance. Granpruno had hyperthyroidism, which made it difficult for him to eat.

However, as the 9-year-old cat began taking medication, he returned to his normal, joyful self.

“He’s the cream of the crop and he gets along well with the other cats in the house,” wrote Chatons Orphelins Montréal on Facebook. “He likes to talk or to have cuddles [and] still likes to have fun. If you have feathers or games with catnip, he becomes a cat that rolls on his back and rubs himself with pleasure. He runs after feathers and he has fun like a baby.”

Chatons Orphelins Montréal was concerned that finding a home for a sick senior cat would be difficult, but Granpruno’s foster parents fell in love with the friendly cat right away and decided to give him his forever home.

Granpruno is now safe and secure, living a happy life with a loving family.

“He always wants to be close to his humans,” Chatons Orphelins Montréal said. “He follows them everywhere to see what they are doing.”
