  • 10-year-old Lorenzo launched message in bottle from Bahamas.
  • It drifted 4000 miles, landing in Portugal one year later.
  • Teacher Maria Enes called, creating joyful transatlantic friendship.

Amy Bisterzo and her 10-year-old son Lorenzo from Fort Old Bay in the Bahamas conducted a delightful ocean experiment last February 10th.

They scribbled their WhatsApp numbers, town name, and date on a note before jet-skiing out to toss the bottle into the sea.

“Of course when we first threw it we were so excited to imagine what might become of the bottle and where it would go,” Bisterzo shared with English media.

“But honestly as time went by we completely forgot about it.”

She viewed it as a fun child activity, though unlikely to be discovered.

On February 12th, 2026, schoolteacher Maria Enes, 49, spotted the bottle on Vila Chã Beach near Porto while walking her dog.

“As it said 2025 and it was so new I thought it was from the area and I took it home with me. I took the paper with tweezers and I was astonished that it came from the Bahamas— exactly one year had passed.”

Finding a message in a bottle felt like a “childhood fantasy” to her.

“I thought it was awesome and I called the number in the note,” Enes said.

Amy received the unexpected call from Portugal as she prepared for bed, leading to an instant bond through voice notes and videos.

“I never thought it would be found, let alone almost to the year exactly, let alone go so far and also to be found by the perfect person.”

Maria hopes to host them in Vila Chã someday for a shared bottle-tossing adventure.
