Sun Bear Babu Beats Cancer, Delights in Honey Medicine!

Quick Smiles:
- Babu, a beloved sun bear at Edinburgh Zoo, surprises everyone by going into remission from terminal cancer.
- Her medicine, cleverly hidden in honey, brought her immense joy and aided in her recovery.
- Experts are thrilled with Babu’s progress, noting her return to her curious, natural behaviors.
In the heart of Edinburgh Zoo, a sun bear named Babu has astounded both her caretakers and the veterinary community by entering remission after a dire cancer diagnosis. Initially given only days to live, Babu’s journey took a miraculous turn when her medicine was disguised in honey, her favorite treat.
Babu’s diagnosis was publicly shared, with zookeepers focusing on her comfort during what were expected to be her final days. “This news is better than we ever hoped for,” expressed the head of veterinary services at The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland.
The prognosis was grim, as a similar case in China resulted in the bear’s quick demise. However, Babu’s story took a different path, largely due to the innovative treatment plan devised by the veterinary team.
Vets noted that one of the “sweetest parts” of Babu’s situation was her delight in taking her medicine, which was hidden in honey. Normally reserved for special occasions, honey became a regular part of her recovery routine.
The head of veterinary services was “delighted that Babu has responded so positively to the medication,” a sentiment echoed by the entire team who were navigating uncharted waters.
A veterinary surgeon at RZSS remarked, “This diagnosis was new territory.” The team had to rely on canine studies, as lymphoma is uncommon in bears, to tailor Babu’s treatment plan.
After six months of treatment, Babu showed remarkable improvement. Tests revealed a significant reduction in cancerous cells, and further assessments confirmed her remission. A veterinary oncologist confirmed the joyous news.
Babu’s keepers now monitor her weight and daily behaviors closely to catch any changes early. “She’s really interested in digging around in her habitat for insects at the moment,” added the veterinary surgeon, highlighting Babu’s return to her natural, inquisitive behaviors.
Living in captivity, sun bears can enjoy up to 30 years, giving Babu potentially another decade with her fans. “For now, what matters most is that Babu is happy, healthy, and back to her old self.”
