In the breathtaking yet unforgiving wilderness of British Columbia’s Rockies, 20-year-old Sam Benastick’s planned 10-day camping trip morphed into an extraordinary 50-day survival tale.

Initially setting out on October 7th for fishing and adventure, Sam’s journey took an unexpected turn when he didn’t return as scheduled. His family, concerned for his safety, rallied the community and enlisted the help of over 120 volunteers, including local search and rescue teams, to find him. Sam was eventually discovered on a remote access road by surveyors after enduring the harsh conditions of Redfern-Keily Provincial Park.

This park, known for its stunning scenery, also poses serious challenges with its unpredictable weather, wildlife, and lack of communication networks. Sam’s mother, Sandra Crocker, confirmed his safe return, sharing a photo of him smiling from his hospital bed, humorously noting, “he complained he didn’t even catch one fish.”

Despite facing frostbite, exhaustion, and smoke inhalation, Sam’s spirit remained strong. His step-grandmother, Eileen Stevens, joked about gifting him a GPS for Christmas, while his uncle, Al Benastick, expressed confidence that this experience wouldn’t deter Sam’s passion for the wilderness.

Sam’s incredible resilience was praised by Timber Bigfoot, a land and environment manager from the Prophet River First Nation, who remarked, “I think it’s a miracle, and I congratulate him for being such a tough person.” The authorities were also involved in the search, although they have kept details sparse, as no criminal activity was involved.
