There is something very pure about the friendship between a child and an animal.  It helps a child learn how to take care of another being, be responsible for its welfare, and just the plain joy of having a friend.

One toddler, Kolten, grew up caring for their horse Maple.  He has come to respect the horse and the other animals which are a lot bigger than he is. He has learned how to hold his hand flat to feed Maple and even knows how to call her even when she is far from her.

He has learned how to feed, brush and give Maple lots of hugs and kisses.

Kolten even proudly leads his “May May” on a rope while Maple sweetly obeys Kolten to follow where he leads her.

Melina thinks that it is incredible and meant to be how the two hit it off.

The friendship and loving relationship started from the get go when Maple came to live with them. According to Kolten’s mom, Melina, Maple responds to Kolten more than with her.

Melina recalled,  “The first time he called Maple from the pasture, she just turned around and looked at him and came running up.” She added, “I was like, ‘Why doesn’t she do that with me?’”

Even if Kolten can barely reach Maple, Maple gently allows Kolten to handle her. Kolten is Maple’s favorite human and would neigh back at him when he calls her and trot to him.

As now that Kolten has grown, he has already gotten on Maple’s back a few times! Each time that he does, he is gaining Maple’s trust and so does Maple with him. Melina said, “They already have that bond. They already have that trust. She’s already a very calm horse who’s eager to learn. I can just see them learning together and growing.”

Oh, what a beautiful friendship these two have developed!
