In southern Texas, 19-year-old Juan Mendoza sprang into action when he saw a car crash leave a couple stranded in a smoking vehicle. He immediately ran into traffic, moved debris, and helped pull the elderly couple to safety.

“I thought they could have kids,” Mendoza explained, inspired by thoughts of his younger siblings. “And I was like, I’m going to get them out.”

Juan O’Matta, nearly 80, and his wife Adriana were overwhelmed by his bravery. As O’Matta recalled, “Nobody stopped. He was the only one who stopped.”
