Quick Smiles:

  • Arthur Ashe Stadium will glow light blue from dusk to dawn in tribute to those lost 25 years ago
  • The tournament will feature moments of silence and special recognition ceremonies throughout the day
  • Donations will support families of heroes and first responders through Tuesday’s Promise and Tunnel to Towers Foundation

September 11, 2026, marks the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the United States. A total of 2,977 innocent people lost their lives that day, and more than two decades later, the memory remains deeply etched in our hearts.

To honor the victims, the first responders, and all those who helped New York rebuild following one of the most challenging days in American history, the US Open plans to honor the anniversary in a very special way.

“On Friday, the tournament will host scheduled moments of silence, special pre-match recognition ceremonies, and visual tributes throughout the grounds of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center,” the US Open shared in a news release.

The tribute continues beyond the ceremonial moments. In support of the National 9/11 Memorial & Museum’s call to illuminate the New York City skyline in shared remembrance, Arthur Ashe Stadium will feature a ‘Tribute in Light’ and glow light blue from dusk until dawn.

This powerful symbol honors the lives lost and celebrates New York’s unbreakable spirit and strength.

The United States Tennis Association has long honored the anniversary of 9/11, its victims and heroes. If the US Open tournament falls on 9/11, USTA finds a way to commemorate the solemn anniversary with dignity and respect.

“The USTA is proud to support those affected by 9/11 through donations to Tuesday’s Promise, an organization offering ongoing support for families grieving traumatic loss, and the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which supports military veterans, first responders, and the families of those killed in the line of duty,” according to the US Open.

These organizations continue the vital work of caring for families who lost loved ones and supporting the brave men and women who serve our communities every day.

The United States changed profoundly on 9/11. Twenty-five years later, we will never forget and continue to work toward keeping the victims’ and heroes’ memories alive through tributes like these that remind us of our resilience, unity, and unwavering spirit.
