  • Tommy the Staffordshire terrier meets his puppies for the first time.
  • The video of their interaction has taken TikTok by storm.
  • Experts weigh in on the rare paternal behavior of male dogs.

A delightful video has captured the hearts of internet users everywhere, featuring a Staffordshire terrier named Tommy as he encounters his newborn puppies for the first time.

The clip, shared on TikTok by @izythestaffy, shows Tommy gently approaching the kennel of his day-old puppies, sniffing and licking them as if to say “welcome to the world.”

“Daddy Tommy’s reaction to meeting his 1 day old blue staffy puppies,” reads the caption accompanying the video.

Tommy’s tender interaction is quite unique, as male dogs typically don’t exhibit strong paternal instincts.

According to experts, male canines usually don’t form attachments to their offspring. However, this doesn’t mean they can’t bond with puppies in the same way they might with other dogs.

The question of whether male dogs recognize their puppies as their own remains unanswered.

Dr. Jess Kirk, a Georgia-licensed veterinarian, suggests that a positive introduction can help reduce any potential risks of harm.

It is advised that introductions between adult dogs and puppies should be gradual, ideally in a neutral outdoor setting to prevent any dominance issues.

Both dogs should have designated spaces for solitude, and a crate for the puppy is recommended if the older dog shows signs of irritation.

Puppies tend to have more energy than older dogs, which can lead to unwanted playtime pestering.

Owners should supervise interactions until both dogs are completely comfortable with each other.

If you can’t be home all day, consider keeping the puppy in a crate when you’re away.
