  • A pair of pigs fought off a huge black bear who climbed into their Connecticut pen.
  • The pigs were able to drive the bear out of their pen.
  • The brave pigs are therapy pigs.

When a bear scaled a fence and started assaulting one of the pigs in New Milford earlier this month, the pigpen looked more like a wrestling ring.

NBC Connecticut obtained security video from the ring that showed Mary the white pig fighting back against the bruin.

A black hog named Hammy, who had been in a roofed shelter attached to the sty, suddenly charged at the bear and backed it into a corner on its hind legs, as seen on the dramatic footage.

The frightened bear leaps out of the pen after a few moments. The therapy pigs’ owner, Rebecca Shaw, told the outlet that she was proud of the brave animals:

“I am very proud of them because Hammy, the little one especially, he’s afraid of his own shadow and the way he came charging out when he seen Mary tussling with the bear. He was like ‘oh no, no way, get out.’

Shaw added that if there’s a commotion in the backyard, an alarm usually goes out, but she didn’t hear it that evening. She discovered the bear after she heard her son and brother screaming.

The bear appeared “sweet” at first on the CCTV tape, tumbling around in the hay beside the pig cage — until it leaped the fence, she said.

“That’s when I realized that my pigs can defend themselves,” Shaw said. “I thank God, again, because it could have ended very badly.”
