This University Just Made History in the Most Hilariously Wholesome Way Possible

Quick Smiles:
- 682 people dressed as dinosaurs set a jaw-dropping new Guinness World Record
- University celebrated 60 years with free barbecue, dancing, and adorable dino costumes
- Community erupted in cheers and hugs when the record-breaking count was announced
The University of Calgary just celebrated its 60th birthday in the most delightfully unexpected way imaginable. To mark the milestone, the school broke the Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of people dressed as dinosaurs—and the scenes were absolutely priceless.
On April 11th, 682 people gathered for the campus Community Day, and every single one arrived dressed as their favorite prehistoric creature. By doing so, they stomped past the previous record of 468, set by Cox Science Center and Aquarium in West Palm Beach, Florida, on January 10th, 2025.

To rally the troops, university administrators invited students, faculty, staff, alumni, donors, and locals to a Rex’s Jurassic Jamboree. They encouraged everyone to wear their favorite dinosaur costume—and the community responded with enthusiasm that can only be described as roar-some.
The event featured free barbecue and a meet-and-greet with Olympians connected to the university. But the real stars of the day were the dinosaurs themselves.
“People showed up in some fabulous onesies [and] blow-up dinos where you could not see any part of the person inside except for their feet,”
University of Calgary Vice-Provost Verity Turpin shared with the Canadian Broadcasting Company.
Once everyone arrived, the crowd danced to music from a local band. They sang We Are the Champions by Queen while waiting for a Guinness adjudicator to make the official count—and the anticipation was electric.
“As soon as we heard Guinness say, ‘Six,’ we knew we broke the record,”
Turpin recalled with obvious joy.
“And no one listened to anything after that. We were all screaming and hugging each other. It was awesome.”
The university’s president and vice-chancellor Ed McCauley couldn’t resist a good-natured joke about the achievement.
“The old record is extinct,”
he quipped during an interview with the Calgary Herald.
“This is just a great example of the University of Calgary and our Calgary community coming together to set a world record.”
The original record for the largest gathering of people dressed as dinosaurs was set on January 26, 2019, in Los Angeles, California. It was broken once in 2025, and now Calgary has claimed the crown in spectacular fashion.
This heartwarming celebration proves that sometimes the best way to honor a milestone is to embrace joy, community spirit, and a healthy dose of playfulness. Here’s to 60 more years of making memories—dinosaur costumes optional, but highly encouraged.
