In a remarkable display of courage and quick thinking, Timothy VanNostrand, a seasoned timber trucker from New York, stepped up during a dangerous incident on Interstate 88.

The event unfolded in June 2023 when VanNostrand found himself in the middle of a tense situation involving a state trooper and a shooter.

As the owner of a logging transport company in Northville, VanNostrand is no stranger to hazardous conditions, though gunfire is typically not part of his daily routine.

“It happened so fast,” he shared.

“I wasn’t 100% sure what I saw at first, but I saw the trooper kind of skip sideways a little bit.”

VanNostrand witnessed the driver of a car, which had been pulled over, draw a gun and begin shooting at the trooper.

This initiated a chaotic 12-minute encounter with “bullets flying.”

In an act of bravery, VanNostrand maneuvered his logging truck to block the shooter’s car, effectively trapping him against the road’s edge.

While the details of the shooter’s fate remain unspecified, VanNostrand’s intervention ensured the situation did not escalate further.

Recognizing his heroism, the New York State Police and The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company honored VanNostrand with the prestigious “Highway Hero” title.

“The Goodyear Highway Hero Award is one way Goodyear recognizes the importance of the commercial trucking industry, which helps move 72.5% of the U.S. economy’s goods,” explained Joe Burke, vice president of Goodyear North America Commercial Business.

“The purpose of the Highway Hero program is to bring more awareness and appreciation to the powerful impact that commercial drivers can have on the roads, individuals’ lives, and communities.”

In addition to the accolade, VanNostrand received a cash prize and an exciting ride in the Goodyear blimp.

Reflecting on the experience, he remarked, “It felt like such a long time when ‘you’re sitting there’ listening to gunfire,” but he is relieved that “it turned out it was the right decision.”

He humbly noted, “Most of the people I know and work with would do the same thing.”

“We all look out for each other, and 99% of us are looking out for everybody else too.”
