  • The Bezhenar family is one of the refugees from war torn Ukraine.
  • They had to leave their daughter’s cat behind as they had no means to bring him along.
  • Nearly a dozen people contributed to the cat’s journey from across Europe to the United States to reunite with his beloved human and family.

The war in Ukraine has forced a lot of Ukrainians to flee their homes.  Some had to leave their beloved pets behind.

The Bezhenar family of Odessa is one of the refugees who traveled to Romania to escape the war.  They had no means to bring along their 10-year-old daughter Agnessa’s cat, Arsenii.

From Romania, they were linked to a man in the Bay Area in the US, who opened his house for them.  So off they go to America.

Throughout all the journey, Agnessa was longing for her cat. Her mom, Maria Bezhenar said, “She [Agnessa] missed sleeping with her cat and she missed hugging him, she missed everything about the cat because she had grown up with him.”

When German stewardess Dee Harnish learned of the story, she contacted her friend Viola who was in Hawaii. Viola, in turn called an animal rescuer in Houston, Angelica, who started the rescue efforts for Arsenii, rolling.

Arsenii was in the care of Maria’s brother-in-law, who vaccinated, microchipped and got a passport for Arsenii.  He then drove Arsenii in his motorcycle to the border to Moldova.

When Arsenii reached Moldova, another man drove him to Bucharest where a family will take care of him.  From there, he was picked up by Mimi Kate to Romania.  Being a non-EU member country, all the cat’s documents had to be checked in Romania.

A tuk-tuk driver volunteered to drive Arsenii and Kate from Bucharest back to make her flight in Athens. And from there, they flew to Montreal in Canada before heading to Seattle.  All in all, it was a journey of 7,000 miles, involving almost a dozen people.

Arsenii traveled across Europe and crossed the Atlantic Ocean to be with Agnessa and his family.

This is a war time story that deserves to be told for the selfless acts to unite a 10-year-old and her beloved cat.  For in the end, the happiness of both girl and cat also filled the hearts of those who helped in the journey. Tissues, please.
