NY Daily News | Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson

Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson tested positive for coronavirus while in Australia. The news came after the couple decided to disclose their diagnosis to the public. Thankfully, both have been cleared to return home to the US after recovering from the disease.

Before this clearance, however, Corona DeVries, an 8-year-old boy from Australia, penned the actor to wish him well. Tom Hanks is in Australia throughout his recovery where he received treatments for the disease, so the boy decided on this letter.

In this letter, the boy mentioned in passing how difficult the situation at his school is, being bullied because of his name. Corona finds himself at the receiving end of comments from other kids making fun of him, calling him “Coronavirus.” This situation made him feel bad, but he wanted to do something so that others will not feel the same way.

Tom Hanks wrote back not even a month later, and with the reply is a special gift from him to the boy: a special typewriter which just happened to have “Corona” printed on it. This is the same typewriter the actor mention on one of his posts on social media back when he was in Australia This same one used to type out his letter to the little boy.

“Your letter made my wife and I feel so wonderful!” Tom Hanks said. “Thank you for being such a good friend — friends make their friends feel good when they are down.”

The actor asks the boy to learn how to use the typewriter to write him back. After that, he signed his name on the personal letter and put a handwritten PS that reads, “You’ve got a friend in me,” at the end.

If ever you are wondering how to encourage a child going through a difficult time, this is a good way to go. Tom Hanks showed us he might just even be a better friend than Woody, and we all know how much of a good friend Woody is.
