Yaxel Lendeborg completed a stunning ascent from an unknown community college freshman to a national champion at the University of Michigan.

The star forward hoisted the trophy after leading the Wolverines to a 69-63 victory over UConn for their first title in 37 years.

His journey to the top was fueled by the support of his mother, Yissel Raposo, who encouraged him to overcome academic hurdles and pursue his basketball dreams.

Lendeborg made his single season at Michigan count by earning Big Ten Player of the Year honors while playing for his mother as she undergoes cancer treatment.

"His journey is one of the most unique in the history of our sport," Michigan head coach Dusty May said.

"It’s been special coaching him because he had no idea what he was capable of or how good he is."

Raposo remained her son’s biggest inspiration throughout the tournament, cheering from the stands despite her health challenges.

After the victory, the two shared an emotional hug that celebrated both the championship and their enduring bond.

"She find outs she has cancer, and … she’s thinking about me," Lendeborg shared.

"It was so sad, man. But it says so much."

The Wolverines also made history as the first team to win a national title with five transfer players in their starting lineup.

Following this remarkable season, Lendeborg is now projected to be a first-round pick in the upcoming NBA Draft.
