  • When Trooper Jeff Freeman encountered and rescued a stray German Shepherd, he thought nothing of it at first.
  • He turned the pup over to animal control and went on with his duties.
  • But when Jeff learned that the pup was scheduled for euthanasia, he didn’t hesitate to rush over and adopt him.

Trooper Jeff Freeman of the Las Vegas Commercial Enforcement wasn’t planning on getting a dog, but it seemed to be fate when he encountered a German Shepherd at a joint commercial enforcement checkpoint.

According to the Nevada Highway Patrol, the pup was “skittish” around the other troopers but seemed to be fond of Jeff.

Eventually, they had to turn the dog over to animal control and Jeff returned to his duties. He thought that it was the last time he would see the sweet dog.

Two weeks later, Jeff received a phone call telling him that the dog they rescued was scheduled for euthanasia in Reno.

Fortunately, a rescue organization got to the dog and was able to contact Jeff.

Without thinking twice, Jeff rushed over to Reno to adopt the dog, whom he named Chief.

He then brought the newest member of his family home.

Jeff and Chief’s story was shared by the Nevada Highway Patrol’s Facebook page back in 2019.

One comment read, “Rescues pick US! Chief picked YOU, Trooper Freeman. Big honor and he will serve you well. Bless your big heart. Smart dogs can pick out great people!”

“A beautiful, loving story. Chief knew that he belonged with the trooper. He just knew,” another comment read. “Much, much respect to the rescue group who substantially made this adoption possible. May their karma be returned 10 fold.”

Chief was fortunate to have met the troopers that day, and he was lucky to have found Jeff.

Lots of aspiring pet parents take the time to research before adopting, but Jeff didn’t think twice to save a dog in need.

We’re thankful and happy that Jeff and Chief found each other.
