Two Shelter Dogs Find a New Home Together in Indiana

Cheers and emotional goodbyes filled the City of Tracy Animal Services as Clyde, an American Staffordshire terrier, finally walked out the door. After spending 831 days at the California shelter, the six-year-old dog was not leaving for his new life alone.

The milestone moment turned into a double celebration when Thor, a pit bull-husky mix, was adopted by the same owner. Both dogs wagged their tails and hopped into the vehicle with giant smiles as if they knew their waiting was over.

The man behind the double adoption is Roberto, a volunteer who had been in California for a temporary work assignment. During his downtime, he immersed himself in the shelter’s routine by walking up to six dogs every day.

“Volunteering is clearly more than just volunteering,” said Administrative Assistant JoAnn Ronngren. “It is inspiring to all of us, especially for Roberto, to choose to walk shelter dogs on his downtime.”

As his assignment ended, Roberto realized he could not leave behind the two independent dogs he had bonded with during his service. He decided to bring both Clyde and Thor back to his home in Indiana.

“He was a special person whom we will never forget,” Ronngren said.
