A groundbreaking project in Wales is turning urine collected from major music festivals and sporting events into a flourishing new woodland.

By recovering nutrients from portable toilets at events like Bristol Pride and the London Marathon, a startup is creating odorless, sustainable fertilizer for 4,500 native trees.

The Bristol-based company NPK Recovery uses a specialized mobile processing system to extract nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium from the waste on-site.

This natural, bacteria-driven process incorporates biochar to improve soil health while reducing the environmental burden on local sewage systems.

Co-founder Lucy Bell-Reeves highlighted the potential of this abundant resource to provide fertilizer security for farmers and growers across the UK.

“Urine is a resource that we have in abundance, so it really is a win-win here,” she told SWNS.

The project, supported by a grant from the UK Forestry Commission, successfully grows native species like beech and Scots pine from seed.

“I love the idea that by the end of this three-year project, revelers and runners will have created a fledgling Welsh forest, which could flourish for hundreds of years.”

This innovative approach demonstrates how circular waste management can transform everyday activities into long-term environmental benefits for the planet.
