Introducing Tulip, an eight-year-old rescue cat from Randolph, New Jersey, who has been causing laughter across the internet. Her humorous reaction to her own swishing tail is the highlight of a TikTok video that has accumulated more than 8.9 million views.
Tulip’s story starts with Gina DiCaprio, a passionate animal rescuer who stated, “I do a lot of animal rescue from inner-city shelters and the streets of Newark, East Orange, and Paterson. I rescued Tulip from an inner-city shelter after she had been sitting in a small cage for three months. Her previous owner abandoned her at the age of six, so she’s eight years old now.”
Though Tulip’s expressive dislike for her tail evokes rounds of laughter, it’s also an indication of her underlying anxiety issue. DiCaprio conveys, “I fostered her for almost a year, and no one wanted to adopt her due to her anxiety issues. I chose to keep her because of the deep affection I have for her, and I understand her anxiety. She is under care of one of the best vets in NJ and is prescribed anxiety medication for her tail-chasing habit.”
DiCaprio explains that this peculiar behavior emerges when Tulip feels ignored. She said, “She chases her tail and acts out when I am on the phone or not giving her enough attention. When I administer her the anxiety meds, she settles down within half an hour. She has NEVER bitten her tail aggressively, she just vents her frustration on it.”
The internet audience had mixed reactions to Tulip’s tail antics. Some viewers empathized with Tulip, with one remarking, “I identify with you TuTu…. I too get irate when parts of my body rebel,” while another found a kindred spirit, adding, “Finally spotted a cat I can relate with.” Some found a silver lining in her frustration, with one user stating, “When you’ve had a tough day and your tail’s defiance is the final straw.”
