The Dog Play Spot, an engaging canine daycare in Wilmington, North Carolina, recently dared to tread where no doggy daycare had gone before – by introducing their frolicking guests to the unfamiliar taste of seltzer water.

The internet has since erupted into fits of laughter, thoroughly amused by the varied, and at times hilarious, reactions of the dogs.

Grayson Hirtz, who doubles as a yard attendant and co-social media manager at the daycare, admitted that the idea was sparked after watching a video of dogs taste-testing sparkling water. Considering the unique and “goofy personalities” of the dogs in her care, she couldn’t resist conducting the experiment at her own facility.

Hirtz fondly recalled, “I didn’t expect any of the dogs to necessarily enjoy the sparkling water, but a few of them did and wanted to keep drinking more. Some of them were indifferent, and reacted how they would to normal water. And then others (mostly the Labradors) were really taken aback by the sparkling water and splashed it everywhere.”

Unveiling the behaviour of Labradors, she added, “Labradors tend to drink water with their whole snout because they love water, so the bubbles in the water probably really tickled their noses.”

Among all the reactions, Finn the chocolate Labrador (aka OG) won a special place in her heart. Hirtz, however, was “most surprised” by the dogs who seemed to appreciate the sparkling water, suspecting they “must have liked the bubbles,” or were simply unable to spot the difference.

She explained further, “Many of them had just come from playing outside, so the ones that liked it may have just been extra thirsty after running around in the yards.”

Since the amusing clip was shared on TikTok (@thedogplayspotwilmington), it has claimed viral fame with more than 3.1 million views and over 320,700 likes. Viewers can’t help but chuckle at the assortment of reactions, particularly the dogs who appeared less than impressed with the fizzy substitute for their usual drink.

Emma Pitney, the other half of the social media management team at The Dog Play Spot, echoed the public sentiment, stating, “Our customers love the videos we post because they get to see behind the scenes of what their dogs get up to at daycare. The comments on the video have been really funny and entertaining to read.”

She admitted, “I wasn’t expecting them to necessarily enjoy the taste of sparkling water, but it was surprising how many different reactions we got. My favorite reaction was definitely Joey the tri-colored beagle. He took one taste and immediately ran away.”

Evidently, the entertainment factor of this sparkling water taste-test was a hit among the furry participants and their TikTok followers. They eagerly await the next fun experiment that Hirtz and Pitney plan to launch.
