  • Jade Pursell’s diving trip led to an encounter between her dog Sailor and a Whale Shark.
  • The Whale Shark approached Pursell’s boat where her dog Sailor was and stuck its head out of the water.
  • The friendly dog kissed the head of the Whale Shark which was captured on camera by Pursell.

Whale Sharks are gentle creatures.  So are Labradors.

Jade Pursell was diving off Australia’s Ningaloo Reef when she saw a Whale Shark hanging around their boat.

Out there on the water, she did not feel any danger as Whale Sharks are the world’s largest but harmless fish.  This one measured around 22 feet.

Onboard was her Labrador named Sailor.

Pursell followed the Whale Shark’s movements as it drew near the boat.  Ever inquisitive, Sailor leaned in on the side of the boat to get a glimpse or a whiff of the visitor.  The Whale Shark kept sticking its head out of the water towards the dog.

She could not help but say, “Oh my God” as she continued filming Sailor and the Whale Shark interacting.  And in spite of her warning to Sailor not to touch it, Sailor gave the huge fish a kiss!

Pursell said, “Sailor had never met a whale shark before. I always hoped she would, but that was by far better than I had ever imagined.”  She added, “To see Sailor meet a whale shark, I honestly just felt overjoyed. Animals are incredible, and it couldn’t have gone any better.”

Perhaps the whale shark really did want to make friends with Sailor as it was determined to make its way to the boat and meet the dog. The kiss really did seal a brewing friendship between the two.

“It was such an innocent interaction; I felt so lucky to see it. To think Sailor is probably the only dog in the world to have kissed a whale shark is pretty special,” Pursell said.

We just hope that they do get to meet again and who knows, swim together.
