Wheat Field Transformed Into Giant Living Photo

Almudena Romero, an artist with a background in sustainable farming, is collaborating with the French National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food, and Environment to turn a wheat farm into an enormous living photograph.

She uses two-hectare fields as her canvas, planting wheat in a way that different shades of green create stunning images when viewed from above.

“Coming from a family of sustainable orange farmers in Valencia, I have always been aware of the importance of how we do things as much as what we do, particularly in the context of the current environmental crisis,” she shared.

Her latest project is an image of an eye, which will fully appear this spring as the wheat reaches its peak.

Romero has also explored printing photographs on leaves and plants, using light and natural growth instead of industrial processes.

“I wanted to see what photography could become if it worked with living systems rather than industrial processes,” Romero explained. “The landscape becomes both the medium and the message.”

Once the season ends, the wheat will be harvested and turned into flour, blending creativity with environmental awareness. INRAE researcher Claire Manceau describes it as “a meeting of art and ecology that shows how creativity can reconnect us with the land.”
