Wildlife Overpass Proves Its Worth as Collisions Plummet on Colorado Highway

Quick Smiles:

  • North America’s largest wildlife overpass opens over I-25 in Colorado
  • Animal-vehicle collisions drop 91 percent in the first ten months
  • Bears, elk, moose, and countless smaller creatures safely cross busy lanes

Ten months ago, a sweeping 200-foot bridge spanning six lanes of Interstate 25 near Larkspur, Colorado, opened to the public. Since then, state wildlife officials have watched the numbers with quiet delight.

Today those numbers speak volumes: collisions between vehicles and wildlife have plunged an astonishing 91 percent. Drivers along this once-troublesome stretch now enjoy calmer commutes, while elk, bears, and moose move freely to feeding grounds and winter ranges.

“The data shows that when we give wildlife a safe path, both animals and people benefit,” said a spokesperson for the Colorado Department of Transportation.

Engineers designed the overpass with native soil, drought-tolerant grasses, and subtle fencing that gently guides animals toward the crossing. Motion-triggered cameras have already captured nightly parades of mule deer, foxes, and even the occasional mountain lion.

“It’s heartening to see nature reclaiming safe passage,” the spokesperson added.

The success story is prompting similar projects across the Rockies, proving that practical infrastructure and respect for the natural world can travel hand in hand.
