A wildlife photographer on an expedition to Canada’s Baffin Island captured pictures of a polar bear mother and her cubs. The photographer, Paul Goldstein, was leading a small group of photographers when they spotted the bears against the Arctic snow.

Goldstein, who has guided polar bear safaris and expeditions for 20 years, described the experience as remarkable and unique. The mother bear was standing upright on her hind legs as her two-month-old cubs stood by her side.

Goldstein said the expedition was extreme and incredibly remote, with the nearest community being three hours away by skidoo. The group camped on a frozen fjord in Baffin springtime, enduring temperatures as low as minus 20-30 degrees Celsius.

The photographer said that while the experience was not for everyone, those who brave the elements can sometimes be rewarded with “polar nirvana” such as witnessing a polar bear family in the wild.

Polar bears are an iconic but gravely jeopardized species, according to the website of the National Wildlife Federation. The site added that in spring, female polar bears emerge from dens with their new cubs, making it a good season for discovering amazing and amusing things about this celebrated species.

Among those insights, according to the same source, is the fact that the polar bear rivals the Alaska brown bear as the world’s largest land predator. A large male polar bear may weigh up to 1,500 pounds and grow to nearly 10 feet tall, standing on its hind legs, said the NWF.

In contrast, the females stand “only” up to about 8 feet tall and “tip the scales at a svelte 550 pounds or less.”
