In 2006, the largest wind power project in Kansas began spinning across the Flint Hills. The 50 turbines on rancher Peter Ferrell’s land have since become a steady source of support for his family.

Today, the royalties generated by those turbines represent half of Ferrell’s income, giving him the financial security he needs to keep the ranch intact.

Ferrell hardly notices the turbines anymore. They stand quietly, working alongside the cattle and prairie grass that have defined his life for decades.

“The royalties have allowed me to pass the farm down to my children,” Ferrell shared.
