One hundred and sixty-six years ago today, the Open Championship, lovingly known as the British Open, welcomed its very first competitors on the storied links of Prestwick Golf Club in Ayrshire, Scotland.

Since that sunny autumn day in 1860, the tournament has grown into the oldest of golf’s four major championships and a cherished gathering that rotates among a handful of breathtaking coastal courses throughout the United Kingdom.

The event’s deep roots and welcoming spirit remind fans everywhere that sport can unite generations in friendly competition and shared appreciation for the game.

“It’s more than a tournament; it’s a living piece of history that still feels like coming home,” one longtime Open volunteer shared.
