Worldwide Bird Count Invites Everyone to Join In

Quick Smiles:
- Global event unites more than 800,000 bird lovers.
- Birdwatching supports mental wellness and conservation efforts.
- Anyone can join in from home, parks, or favorite outdoor spots.
The Great Backyard Bird Count returns from February 13 to 16, 2026, welcoming all to enjoy nature and help track bird species. This uplifting event encourages families, friends, and individuals to take just 15 minutes and share their sightings with the world.
Spending time with birds not only connects us to nature but also helps reduce stress. Participants from across the globe get to contribute valuable information that guides conservation and protects habitats for both people and wildlife.
“What I like most about birdwatching is that each species has its own behavior,” said GBBC participant Guadalupe Angel Vallejo Tapia.
Another enthusiast shared, “Birdwatching allows me to appreciate the biodiversity of our region. It invites us to reflect on the importance of protecting our natural spaces.”
This celebration of birds, now in its 29th year, continues to inspire people everywhere. The 2025 count saw birders tally 8,078 species from nearly every country, breaking previous records.
Whether you choose to watch from your backyard, a park, or your balcony, every bird sighting matters. The GBBC website provides instructions, helpful tips, and a map to connect you with local birding communities, making it easy for newcomers to join and experienced birders to lead the way.
“The bird observations we submit can be used to inform conservation efforts that secure a brighter future for birds and people alike,” said Ben Haywood, Audubon’s director of community science.
Share in the joy of birds and help make a difference—every feathered friend counts!
