Young Adults Courageously Fight a Surprising Colorectal Cancer Surge

When Jennifer Lava moved to Washington D.C. in 2019, she was a healthy 34-year-old who regularly attended spin classes and prioritized her nutrition. After experiencing vague stomach aches and nausea, her life changed when doctors discovered a large tumor that led to a stage 4 colorectal cancer diagnosis.

Despite the frightening news, Lava approached her journey with a remarkable sense of humor and resilience. She even nicknamed her initial tumor to break the tension with friends and family during her treatment process.

“You can’t control cancer, but you can control your attitude,” she says.

Over the next several years, Jennifer underwent multiple surgeries and dozens of rounds of chemotherapy and radiation to fight recurrences. Through every setback, she relied on her supportive community and her medical team at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

“I am truly fortunate. My care team has made me feel so much better in a situation that is so scary,” Lava shares.
