As athletes competed at the U.S. Olympic Trials for a spot on Team USA at the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, we witnessed numerous inspiring moments as they showcased their dedication to reach their goal.

Take a look at seven inspiring stories of athletes and the start of their 2021 Olympic journey:

1. The tale of two Katie’s.

Katie was only 15 when she qualified for Team USA at the London Olympics nine years ago. Since then, she has dominated the sport.

Now back for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, she joins another 15-year-old wonderkid who is also named Katie!

Katie Grimes won the second spot next to her role model and name twin after beating her previous 800-meter record by 11 seconds.

2. Allyson Felix has a new audience to wow.

Allyson has already won 13 Olympic medals and 18 medals at World Athletics Championships throughout her career. Just one medal more during her fifth Olympic Games will tie her with Carl Lewis as the most decorated U.S. Olympic track and field athlete of all time.

Still, she wants to prove herself to someone else this summer: her 2-year-old daughter.

3. Jordan Windle’s journey from the orphanage to the Olympics.

Jordan became an orphan when he was just a year old. He then suffered deplorable conditions in an orphanage in his native country of Cambodia until he was adopted by American Jerry Windle.

Thanks to his new family’s support, Jordan has since won four U.S. senior titles and is part of Team USA in 2021.

4. Ryan Crouser qualified with a world record.

Ryan, a 28-year-old shot put and discus thrower, has already won the gold medal for shot put in Rio de Janeiro back in 2016. This year, he not only qualified for Team USA on the first day of the U.S. Olympic Trials but also shattered the indoor and outdoor shot put world records that have narrowly evaded him for years.

5. Sha’Carri Richardson runs to hug her grandma.

After displaying an impressive victory at the 100-meter race, Sha’Carri ran up to the stands to give her grandmother a big hug!

6. Aram Mahmoud joins the IOC Refugee Olympic Team.

Aram was forced to leave his war-torn home country of Syria years ago. Now living in the Netherlands, the badminton player became the first person recruited for the 29-member IOC Refugee Olympic Team!

7. Sierra Schmidt dances before swimming.

Sierra usually gets nervous before races, so she has turned to dancing to calm her nerves. During the 1500-meter race, she busted a move and went viral! She unfortunately didn’t win one of the two qualifying spots, but she still serves as an inspiration to many.
