Ancient Arrowheads Reveal Early Human Ingenuity

Quick Smiles:
- Stone Age arrowheads with 60,000-year-old poison found in South Africa
- Discovery shows advanced knowledge of toxic plants in early humans
- Same plant poison used in both ancient and historic times
Scientists have discovered chemical traces of a poisonous plant called gifbol on 60,000-year-old quartz arrowheads in South Africa, marking the oldest known use of arrow poison.
This remarkable find highlights our ancestors’ sophisticated understanding of plant chemistry and illustrates their innovative hunting practices.
Professor Sven Isaksson from Stockholm University shared,
“Being able to identify the world’s oldest arrow poison together has been a complex undertaking and is incredibly encouraging for continued research.”
Professor Marlize Lombard of the University of Johannesburg explained that this discovery proves not only the early invention of the bow and arrow, but also the strategic use of nature to give hunters an advantage.
The arrowhead’s chemical analysis revealed the presence of special alkaloids from gifbol, a plant still valued for its toxicity by traditional hunters today. Similar substances were identified on 250-year-old arrowheads from Swedish museum collections, showing a remarkable continuity of knowledge.
According to Isaksson,
“Finding traces of the same poison on both prehistoric and historical arrowheads was crucial.”
The evidence shows that early humans not only invented effective hunting tools, but also carefully planned and enhanced them for greater success.
Professor Anders Högberg of Linnaeus University noted,
“Using arrow poison requires planning, patience, and an understanding of cause and effect. It is a clear sign of advanced thinking in early humans.”
This discovery reminds us just how resourceful and clever our hunting ancestors truly were.
Celebrate the ingenuity of early humans and share this fascinating story with someone who appreciates history’s brighter moments!
