The paint was developed at the University of Sydney in collaboration with Dewpoint Innovations. Its porous structure enables water vapor to condense efficiently, providing water for animals, plants, mist cooling, and even hydrogen production.

“This technology not only advances the science of cool roof coatings but also opens the door to sustainable, low-cost and decentralised sources of fresh water – a critical need in the face of climate change and growing water scarcity,” said the university’s Prof Chiara Neto.

Even in dry areas where humidity rises at night, the paint can supplement existing water sources by forming dew when other supplies are scarce. This dual-benefit approach promises both energy savings and added water resilience for drought-affected regions.
