Quick Smiles:

  • Al Roker credits moderation over deprivation for his long-term wellness.
  • He starts every day with weight training and makes movement a priority.
  • Consistency and joyful routines have helped Al recover from major health challenges.

Al Roker celebrates more than two decades of maintaining his 100-pound weight loss, attributing his success to four simple habits. He focuses on balanced eating and steady, enjoyable movement, without denying himself favorite foods.

As Chief Motivation Officer for the Start TODAY wellness app, Al believes that lasting health is about moderation.

“Moderation rather than deprivation is better in the long run,” said Al.

Rather than pushing himself with grueling workouts, he champions a manageable routine, starting each morning with 10 minutes of weight training.

“My mantra is, ‘Something is better than nothing,’” he shared.

Daily walks help Al reach his goal of 10,000 steps, and he sprinkles in ‘walking snacks’—shorter walks throughout the day at work—to stay active. Breakfast is a consistent affair for Al, featuring yogurt, granola, and often a banana, plus convenient, high-protein egg bites he preps in advance.

Al credits his health practices for helping him recover after prostate cancer surgery and other health scares.

“My doctor said if I had not been in the shape I had been, I would most likely not be here today,” Al explained.

He enjoys making healthy, flavorful meals at home, often choosing roasted vegetables, chicken thighs, and fish for dinners that nourish and satisfy.

Let Al’s commitment and positive mindset inspire your own journey to wellness—small, consistent steps can make a big difference!
