  • If not for the Save Elephant Foundation, Baby Chaba would’ve been forced to be a circus elephant like her mom.
  • Thanks to the foundation, they are now living a free, happy life with other elephants at a sanctuary.
  • Chaba has particularly developed a liking to splashing around in the water!

Chaba’s mother, BunMa, had been forced to entertain tourists daily at an elephant riding camp in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

When Save Elephant Foundation visited the small concrete pen where Chaba and BunMa resided, they found it “barren of any enrichment, and the mother on a short chain.”

“It was immediately clear that they were both in poor health and needed urgent intervention,” said projects director Ry Emmerson.

The foundation’s founder negotiated the elephant family’s release and helped rescue them in August.

They had originally planned to transport them to the Elephant Nature Park (ENP) by truck, but BunMa refused to get into the vehicle. She was afraid that she would be separated from her then 4-month-old baby.

So the team allowed them to walk to the sanctuary.

“After two hours of walking, they arrived at ENP and were welcomed with an elephant cake,” Ry said.

Chaba enjoyed her cake and took her first bath. And she was absolutely delighted!

Ry shared, “Chaba is a true water baby! She loved splashing around in the water and then running back to Mum for reassurance. Now, she loves to play in the splash pool with her basketball whilst her mum enjoys some tasty fruit treats.”

Baby Chaba getting stronger and more playful.

Baby Chaba's update. The little girl is getting stronger and more playful. As her mother is too young to be a mother, so that sometimes she has stress to take care of her baby all day. It would be better to have a nanny helping the mother. At this moment, Sri Nuan is the best nanny because she is very gentle and loves all young ones. You can see Chaba is becoming mischievous, delighted with life and exploring her wonderful surroundings. Please join EleZoom@ElephantNaturePark tomorrow, Sunday 12 Aug 21 at 2.30pm. The mother-daughter duo are now living a free, happy life at the sanctuary. They get to mingle with other elephants, forage for food, and roll around in mud puddles.

Chaba simply loves playing and splashing around in the water. In the sanctuary, BunMa can relax while her baby is playing. They’ve both become more confident after learning so much.
