Clay Aiken captured America’s heart in the early 2000s after his unforgettable run on the second season of American Idol. Though fan favorite Clay came in second to Ruben Studdard in the season finale, his star continued to rise.
Just months after the show wrapped, he released his debut album, Measure of a Man, and his music career took off beautifully. He stayed busy touring and recording until one unexpected moment on Live with Regis and Kelly in 2006 shifted everything.
During a guest appearance, Clay playfully placed his hand over Kelly Ripa’s mouth to stop her from talking—a lighthearted gesture that created an awkward moment replayed for years to come. Now, twenty years later, Clay is finally opening up about what really happened.
He shared his side of the story on the June 24, 2026, episode of the Hollywood Raw podcast, offering a candid and heartfelt reflection on a week that became one of the most challenging of his life.
Clay Shares His Truth About a Moment That Spiraled
Clay told the Hollywood Raw hosts that his intention was completely innocent—just a playful moment between co-hosts during a fun interview. He admitted to feeling “a little bit bad” immediately afterward, but had no idea how the situation would escalate with Kelly.
The following week, when Regis Philbin returned to the show, Kelly addressed what happened on air.
“There was a lack of respect, and when you’re a certain person, you’re in the public eye, you have to be respectful of other people. And I don’t think that he was respectful in any way. If that upsets his fans, I’m sorry to hear that, but you don’t put your hands over somebody’s face and mouth when they’re conducting an interview, even if it’s for a laugh. And that’s all I’m gonna say.”
According to Clay, the difficult week became even more challenging when Rosie O’Donnell unintentionally revealed his personal life on The View.
“I was not out at the time. I was to Rosie … I was out to people who I knew, but I wasn’t publicly out about it.”
Eventually, Clay’s publicist discovered video footage of Kelly playfully putting her hand over Regis’ mouth during a previous episode—showing the same type of lighthearted gesture. The controversy began to settle down after that.
“She apologized for it becoming blown out of proportion and everything. She said, ‘I’d love to come back on the show anytime, etcetera, etcetera.’ But I do know we tried, and we were not allowed. So I just haven’t tried since. It’s not a big deal. I mean, I honestly have not spoken about it until right now.”
Clay shared that he hasn’t spoken to Kelly since that time. His willingness to finally discuss the incident after two decades shows remarkable maturity and a desire to move forward with peace and understanding.
It’s a beautiful reminder that even difficult moments can lead to growth, and that speaking our truth—even years later—can bring healing and closure.
