College Student’s Summer Mission Will Warm Your Heart — Teen Immigrants Finally Find Their Voice

Quick Smiles:
- Brown University student creates transformative English program for immigrant teens in Providence
- Students gain confidence through real-world community experiences and personal storytelling
- Program helps newcomers build essential language skills while honoring their unique journeys
For a group of teenagers learning English in Providence, Rhode Island, summer school this year looked refreshingly different. Instead of endless textbook drills, they found themselves on field trips throughout the community, putting their developing language skills to work in real-world settings.
Whether ordering at a local market or describing their favorite foods to new friends, these young immigrants discovered their voices in America with help from an inspiring college mentor. The summer program combined traditional vocabulary lessons and journal writing with hands-on experiences that built genuine confidence.
Justin Dunn, a dedicated Brown University student, designed the innovative curriculum to meet students where they are. He understood that mastering a new language isn’t just about grammar rules — it’s about finding the courage to communicate and connect.
The teens explored Providence together, transforming everyday interactions into learning opportunities. A simple conversation with a cashier became a chance to practice polite greetings. Describing items in a store helped expand vocabulary in natural, memorable ways.
Journal entries gave students space to process their experiences and emotions in their new language. Many wrote about their families, their dreams, and the challenges of adapting to life in America — powerful stories that deserved to be heard.
The program emphasized that every student’s background adds richness to the classroom community. Rather than viewing their multilingual experiences as obstacles, Dunn helped teens see them as valuable assets worth celebrating.
By summer’s end, the transformation was unmistakable. Students who initially hesitated to speak English now volunteered answers and eagerly shared stories. Their growing confidence extended far beyond language skills — they were finding their place in a new home.
This heartwarming initiative shows what’s possible when education meets compassion. One college student’s summer commitment created ripple effects that will empower these young people for years to come.
