  • Restaurants and bars now have a 90-minute time limit for seating service as a health precaution.
  • A customer disagreed with the rule and as a protest, left no tip for an $86 bill.
  • The community learned of the incident and raised more than $1,000 for the server.

The pandemic has hit businesses hard. The food and dining industry, in particular, is struggling. Some have closed and some are trying to keep afloat. For those who have just started to pick up, health precautions are still strictly followed. Unfortunately, one angry customer at the Glenbrook Brewery in Morriston took it out on the server and did not leave a tip.

Since indoor dining now operates on a limited capacity, bars and restaurants are forced to implement a seating time limit so that their tables are constantly occupied. This is their way to somehow make a profit as they are still rebounding from a loss or diminished income.

One customer did not agree with the 90-minute time limit for seated service and stiffed the server.

The scribbled note on the $86 bill said: “I’m sorry the server gets screwed on this. Don’t kick paying customers out after 90 minutes.”

The restaurant responded in a statement that they have adapted to the new rules and dutifully followed the health and safety precautions in place while “doing our best to serve our customers.”

“We are struggling to make a living after being shut down for months and still aren’t operating at full capacity,” the statement continued. “We would all love to be back to ‘normal’ where we don’t have to follow so many rules but sadly this is life during the pandemic.”

New Jersey residents learned of the incident from the morriston.nj Instagram account where the restaurant’s statement and a photo of the receipt was posted.

The Morristown Stimulus Plan Facebook group quickly rallied behind the restaurant and the server by donating. One community member started a Venmo that takes down the donations. The total funds have since reached more than $1,000!

As the restaurant had stated, “This is a reminder to be kind and respectful to your servers, we are all trying to do our best to ensure that you have a safe and good time while out.”
