Their love has thrived despite the pandemic and the wedding schedules delayed twice, and this time, no one could stop them to finally tie the knot.

Army Major Jose Perez and Heather Hathaway met in 2018 at a friend’s birthday party. Jose was a bit undecided about attending at first, but he was very grateful he did. The two have fallen in love the moment their eyes met, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Though both were previously married, they gave love another shot, realizing that they were meant for each other and they’ve both found happiness they’ve never felt before.

After six months of dating, Jose proposed to Heather, a single mom to Jade Leo, who was five at that time.

“I said, ‘Oh my God, I’ve got to have this woman in my life. I knew that she was the one,” Jose said, who popped the question at the overlooking spot where they first fell in love. “I was very nervous, like most people… I said, ‘It took me 50 years to find you. I can’t find any other way than to ask you to marry me.’”

Heather did not hesitate to give her ‘yes,’ especially that Jose is all she asked for — he’s not only so loving to her, but also to her son whom he treats as his own. She said that “he’s taken him as his own child. Their bond as father and son is so beautiful.”

Fast forward to 2021, when most Americans have been vaccinated and restrictions have been lifted, the lovebirds finally had the chance to say “I do,” after two postponements given the COVID-19 pandemic, its restrictions, and the loved ones they lost to the virus.

“It’s devastating to go in and have to modify your guest list because people have died,” Heather told Good Morning America. “You have to remove names. It’s not Mr. and Mrs. anymore.”

“We were devastated,” Jose added. “We couldn’t show our joy.”

On Wednesday, the couple tied the knot live on GMA, officiated by GMA co-anchor Michael Strahan!

“I waited for 50 years to find true love. On that fateful night, you captured my heart and soul and I fell in love with you,” Jose said in his vows. “I want to forever hold, cherish, foster and protect that love.”

“I promise to love you and to have faith in your love. I vow to make you laugh out loud and laugh with you, cry grow and create with you, and to be faithful,” Heather said. “I am proud to become your wife and partner and to join my life with yours, forever.”
