Dad and senior rescue cat’s daily sleeping routine: Spooning!

  • Cat and dad’s routine started when after a long time away from home because of work, cat insisted on spooning with dad.
  • Now, the cat comes to his dad’s room every night, purrs immediately and lays down to be a little spoon to dad.
  • If the cat does not get his dad’s attention, he will bring the house down by meowing loudly.

There is something extremely comforting about spooning.  And for 16-year-old cat Charlie, there’s nothing more secure than being a little spoon to his Dad at bedtime.

Charlie’s dad, Conor Coley recalled that at the beginning of the year, when he came from a long period away from home for work, is when the spooning started. Coley said, “The first night since I returned, he insisted on being spooned.”

Charlie does well in sleeping on his own but sleeping in Dad’s bed is his favorite because it’s his dad’s special place and now, that’s where he gets to spoon with Dad.

Every night at 10pm, Charlie enters his Dad’s room. “If I am already in bed he will force his way under the covers, and if I am not in bed, he will sit exactly where I sleep and meow until I go to bed,” Conley said.

Eight years ago, when Coley rescued the “extremely laid-back” cat, he noted that laying in the sunshine was a happy thing for Charlie.  But snuggling is a different high for Charlie.  As soon as he enters his dad’s room, he immediately starts purring.

Coley said that on most nights, Charlie, save for water trips, would spend the entire night with him. “In most cases, he will return promptly and gently pad me awake to let him back into the spoon,” Coley added.

You might think the routine has gotten to be boring.  But for these two, it’s a comforting way of showing their love for each other, every night.

Coley considers Charlie his rock and partner.  Coley said, “He is always there when you need him, and it takes away the struggle of a hard day when he comes in purring for a snuggle.”

And when Charlie wants to get his attention, he sure knows how to get it— by meowing the house down!

Spooning it is, Charlie!
