The cross-country skiing team sprint in Lago Di Tesero, Italy took an adorable turn when Nazgul, a local Czechoslovakian wolfdog, dashed onto the course after escaping his doghouse. His brave sprint gave both skiers and spectators an unexpected treat, as he seemed to enjoy every minute of his new Olympic adventure.

“He was crying this morning more than normal because he was seeing us leaving — and I think he just wanted to follow us,” his owner shared with NPR.

Footage captured Nazgul happily racing behind the athletes, earning smiles from those left on the course. Fortunately, he did not disrupt the medal contenders, and his cheerful presence was met with surprise and delight.

“I was like, ‘Am I hallucinating?” Croatian skier Tena Hadzic said.

Race officials promptly and kindly reunited Nazgul with his family, ending his impromptu adventure on a happy note.
