Quick Smiles:

  • Florida fisherman survives unexpected shark bite thanks to heroic strangers who happened to be nurses
  • Quick-thinking boaters rushed to provide life-saving medical care and called the Coast Guard
  • Survivor shares heartfelt message about gratitude and cherishing every moment with loved ones

David Daniel headed out for what he thought would be an ordinary fishing trip in the beautiful Florida Keys on August 23, 2026. The peaceful day on the water was about to become anything but typical.

While fishing from a sandbar, David spotted what appeared to be a six- or seven-foot nurse shark swimming along the beach line. Within moments, the situation turned frightening.

“It looked like a six- or seven-foot nurse shark. It was cruising parallel on the beach line, and I started to move a little bit, and it turned and b-lined directly at me. Snapped at the top of my foot and let go, realizing I wasn’t a fish or crab or whatever they wanted to eat,” he told WSVN.

What happened next can only be described as miraculous. A group of boaters witnessed the attack and immediately rushed to help. As fate would have it, these weren’t just any good Samaritans—they were trained medical professionals including nurses and EMTs.

“If it weren’t for them, I would 100% be dead on the beach. Grace to God that they were all medically trained people and nurses and EMTs,” David said.

Chris Green, one of the heroes who stopped to help, explained their quick response. The team knew exactly what to do in this critical moment.

“We did our job as nurses to help control the bleeding and get the limb elevated, and we hollered for somebody to call the Coast Guard,” Green explained.

A New Perspective on Life

David underwent two surgeries and is now recovering well. The experience has given him a profound new outlook on what really matters in life.

He shared his heartfelt message about the fragility of life and the importance of expressing gratitude.

“I feel incredibly humble and thankful that I realized that every minute does count in your life. One minute you could be walking around having a great time, looking at beautiful weather and having fun with friends. And the next minute, you could literally be dead. So I really have to look at myself and remember to be thankful for everyone around me and what I do have. And to express that more and tell people that you care about them and that you appreciate them being around you,” he said.

David’s story is a powerful reminder that heroes walk among us every day—and that taking time to appreciate our loved ones can never happen too often.
