  • Scientists test floating underwater umbrellas to shield fragile coral from deadly heat waves.
  • Early results show the temporary shades can reduce bleaching and help stressed reefs recover.
  • The simple, low-cost idea brings fresh hope for protecting Caribbean marine life.

Florida researchers are testing a gentle new way to defend coral reefs against the stress of rising ocean temperatures. Temporary floating shades, affectionately called “underwater umbrellas,” are being placed over vulnerable colonies in the Caribbean.

The shades block just enough sunlight to lower the water temperature around the coral without cutting off the light they need to survive. This small adjustment can stop the bleaching process that turns living reefs ghostly white and eventually kills them.

“We wanted to see if we could give the corals a break from the heat long enough for them to recover,” said a lead researcher from Nova Southeastern University.

Initial trials show the protected corals stayed healthier and regained their vibrant colors faster than nearby unprotected colonies. Because the umbrellas are removable and reusable, they offer a practical tool that communities can deploy during predicted heat events.

The project proves that even simple, nature-inspired solutions can make a meaningful difference in the fight to preserve the ocean’s living rainforests.
