Giant Cow Knocks On Window Every Day To Get Hugs

  • When Ryan Phillips rescued a 3-day-old calf he named Jenna, he was not expecting the cow to see him as a surrogate mom.
  • Starting from the first bottle that he gave her, the cow had already established that mooing for and knocking would bring her food and hugs.
  • Now that Jenna has grown into a huge cow, she still knocks on her dad’s windows and doors to demand a hug or food.

Life With Pigs Farm Animal Sanctuary founder Ryan Phillips rescued the calf, Jenna, when she was only 3 days old.  Like any animal who is food motivated, Jenna would moo when she wanted to be fed.  She learned early on that knocking would get his dad’s attention and that her milk would soon follow.

Phillips said, “That first bottle was the start of friendship, and from then we were best friends.” He added, “I think she adopted me as her surrogate mom. She would head butt my stomach to try to get the milk to come out when bottles were empty, just as calves do to their moms. She’s definitely my baby.”

The mooing and knocking became a habit until she grew up to be a huge cow.

Phillips continued, “Jenna knocks daily, multiple times daily. She likes to come to the window and stare if we’re eating or hanging out to let us know she’s there.”

Jenna would use her horns to knock when she wants her dad to meet her outside and give her a hug.  She would also stand by the window and knock to ask for carrots or the extra-ripe bananas that she knows are for her.

The adorable cow would come knocking not just during the day but even in the middle of the night.  Just like one instance when Phillips woke up to the sound of thudding in his house.

He was still a little sleepy when he realized it was Jenna who was making the noise.  Jenna was demanding hugs.

Phillips does not mind the “break-ins”. “She knows she’s loved, safe and that everybody adores her. I cannot imagine a world without her. I wake up every day excited that she’s there. I’m just so lucky to have a 1,400 pound best friend that wants to hug, hang out and snuggle in her barn.”

What an amazing friendship!
