  • Brad was confused when he noticed their mild-mannered dog Roxy making a ruckus in the middle of the night.
  • He realized that an alarm was sounding off and alerting them to a carbon monoxide leak.
  • Thanks to Roxy’s actions, the whole family made it out of the house safely and found the source of the leak.

A family from Ankeny, Iowa, is grateful to their dog Roxy for alerting them to a carbon monoxide leak in the middle of the night.

Roxy’s family describes her as a “mild-mannered” dog. The husky/coonhound mix “doesn’t really bark a lot,” Brad Harbert told CBS affiliate WHO.

“She does howl if you ask her to talk,” he added.

But that night, Roxy displayed unusual behavior and activity. “I could tell something was up with Roxy,” Brad recalled. She kept jumping up and down the bed.

Brad eventually came to and heard an alarm. Thinking that it wasn’t the sound of the smoke alarm, he realized that it was another alarm: their carbon monoxide alarm.

As soon as he jumped out of bed, Roxy proceeded to the hallway. She then headed towards the room of Brad’s son, Jackson, and scratched at his door to alert him.

Brad recounted, “I grabbed the [carbon monoxide] detector and found out that if it chirps four times, it’s triggered. There’s active carbon monoxide in the house.”

Thanks to Roxy, the whole family made it out of the house without incident.

Brad called 911, and the Ankeny Fire Department arrived shortly after.

According to the energy company, the carbon monoxide leak came from their combination electric/gas fireplace.

Brad is more than thankful for their life-saving pup, who has always been “pretty special” to their whole family.

“I can tell something was wrong that night,” Brad shared. “She woke me up, and just her actions — she was kinda shivering and just really concerned that we weren’t gonna get outside.”

Roxy is definitely one hero dog!
